10 top tips to create a California style wedding

Jun 21, 2022 | Planning

Weddings in California have an effortless elegance and unmistakeable golden glow that we just can't get enough of. It's the dream wedding destination for many couples but if traveling to the golden state is out of the question, we believe you can still create that beautiful breezy Californian vibe wherever in the world you live. SoCal wedding photographer and Fine Art Curation member, Lisa from Wisteria Photography shares her top tips to inspire you.

1. Take engagement photos by the coast

If a beach wedding isn't possible, you can still get your coastal fix with an engagement session by the sea instead because what screams California more than the beach? Pick a beach with varied landscapes to give you a variety of different breathtaking photo backdrops.

2. Flatlay your wedding details

Ask your photographer to style your stationery, shoes, rings and other special mementos that are a part of your day. These are often overlooked but a special thought out decision that deserve to be documented. When you receive your wedding gallery, you’ll have the complete story of your big day - from the invitation your guests received in the mail to the heels you wore under your gown.

3. Rock a sleeveless or off shoulder gown

The beautiful California weather lends itself to sleeveless wedding dresses in light materials that billow in the sea breeze. Think bridal dress designers like Claire Pettibone, Galia Lahav, Alon Livné, Berta, Monique Lhuillier and Marchesa.

4. Do a first look

Take a moment before all the excitement of your big day by doing a first look or vow exchange. This creates an intimate moment for the two of you, and can help alleviate any wedding day jitters.

5. Have an outdoor ceremony and reception

Soak in the sun and surrounding nature as you say i do. Whether you’re getting married in a garden, at a ranch, vineyard or by the coast, celebrate the great outdoors by spending as much of your day outside as possible.

8. Create a mood at your reception

Let's not forget about reception details! Loose fine art floral centerpieces will take your tablescape to the next level. Pair your centerpieces with tall candle votives, gold flatware, and custom glassware to really wow your guests and create a relaxed yet high-end experience.

9. Turn your cake into a piece of art

Don’t miss the opportunity to dazzle your guests with every stunning detail, including your wedding cake. And beautiful doesn't have to mean extravagant if that's not your thing, understated designs can be just as striking. Fresh citrus flavours like lemon, lime and grapefruit feel very Californian, with natural decorations like olive foliage, fresh fruit and flowers.

10. Take golden hour portraits

Even if you do a first look, plan to sneak away around sunset for another 15-20 minutes of golden hour photos. The lighting is softer, creating a warm dreamy aesthetic that's distinctly Californian. These are often the best portraits in your wedding day collection and so worth it!
