Honeymoon Inspiration - Iceland
Ever since we started seeing Iceland feature more and more on Instagram and social media as THE place to be for young millennials, Mr Sparrow and I have been desperate to check out the epic landscape of this beautiful country. So like a ray of light through a never ending inbox of emails, the wonderful Thomson Holidays offered us the chance to head to Iceland during February to see just what Iceland offers not only for a stunning honeymoon destination, but a wedding too!
We arrived to the chilly weather (thankful for my windproof jacket!), and spent a short time staring out the windows of the car at the incredible scenery whizzing by on our way to Reykjavik. I must start this post with the following statement: I do not like cold weather. Not snow, not ice, especially not negative temperatures. So I was hesitant to venture to this renowned icy country but I was instantly in love with the landscape and soon forgot about the cold.
Our first trip out was to try to see the Northern Lights! Obviously being one of the 7 Wonders of the World, the Aurora Borealis is something you MUST try and see at least once in your life. We journeyed away from the lights of the city towards the country in the dark to try and see if there was any activity in the skies. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans for us and there were no glimpses of any neon green for us! Boo! But if you do go, try every night if you can to see them!
Our first full day on our Thomson Honeymoon trip was a whirlwind of the Golden Circle which took us to National Parks, waterfalls and geysers. We were amazed at Thingvellir National Park, where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart at a rate of a few centimetres per year. So naturally we had to take some pictures with our photographer Brumley & Wells here before it grows any further apart!
The Gullfoss (Golden Falls) waterfall, created by the river Hvítá, which tumbles and plunges into a crevice some 32 m (105 ft.) deep was an awesome sight. And possibly the coldest part of our trip! The sound of the thundering water was inspiring and the sheer size of this pale blue waterfall was something we could have stared at all day (even through the risk of hypothermia!). And if anyone follows the Kardashians (anyone?!), you’ll see they were visiting this waterfall just last week so technically it’s super famous now, yes?
A short ride later and we had the chance to warm up (yay!) by standing next to the natural phenomenon of the Hot Springs. Iceland is incredibly powered by geothermal technology throughout the whole island. Having a hot shower in Iceland? Yep, it’s that Geyser water! Need boiling water for a coffee? Straight out of the tap no problem. The island utilises their natural resources so well and it’s wonderful to see those big pipes travelling the length of the country full of this hot fresh water. The Strokkur geyser shoots a column of water up to 30 metres into the air every 4-8 minutes in a thrilling display of nature’s forces so get that camera ready and get to the front of the crowd to see it in it’s full glory (take note of the wind direction that day if you don’t want to get wet!).
Our first day was packed full of activity so naturally we had to find some way to relax and take in the day so Mr Sparrow and I headed to the world famous Blue Lagoon. Hands down one of our favorite parts of the trip. If Mr Sparrow wasn’t at the bar getting a cold Icelandic beer to float around in the milky white water, we were covering ourselves in the Silica Mud Mask they provide at the side of the water. With in water massages, steam rooms, waterfalls and epic scenery surrounding the outdoor pool, it’s definitely the perfect honeymoon spot to unwind and chill with your new hubby. You can hire your bathrobes and even your swimming trunks should you forget! The Blue Lagoon even holds weddings and events so if you fancy jumping in the hot springs with your dress on, you know where to head…
We then headed to our temporary home in trendy Reykjavik to get some sleep before visiting Glaciers the next day. Come back next week when we’ll be showing off the vast whiteness and stepping Into The Glacier in our part two of this epic trip…
