How to take care of your engagement ring
Once you have a beautiful sparkler on your ring finger, you'll want to keep it safe and looking perfect for years to come. If you're unsure where to start in looking after your engagement ring, we've got you covered with a few engagement ring care tips everyone should follow.
1. Clean your ring regularly.
Wash your ring regularly to avoid a build-up of dirt that will dull its sparkle. Just drop it into a mug of warm water mixed with a little mild dishwashing detergent, let it sit for a few minutes, then gently scrub the stone with a soft-bristled toothbrush, rinse, and pat dry. Be sure to put the plug in if you're washing it over the sink.
2. Know when to take your ring off (and leave it on)
There are definitely occasions when you should remove your ring to avoid loss or damage (eg. swimming, playing sport, baking) but try to resist the urge to remove it every time you wash your hands. It's easy to leave it behind if you get distracted in a public restroom, for example.
3. Place ring dishes around your home
Keep ring dishes throughout your home so that when you do need to take it off, you know exactly where to look. From the bathroom to the kitchen to your bedside table, having a designated place for your ring will help to avoid losing it.
4. Check your ring regularly
Diamonds may be the hardest naturally occurring substance on earth, but they are not invincible and can still can still fracture, bruise, and chip. So look out for any damage to the prongs or diamond itself and hold it up to your ear, and give it a little shake. If you hear anything, you'll need to get the setting tightened.
5. Insure your engagement ring
Insuring your engagement ring should be a top priority as it is likely to be one of the most expensive items you own, especially relative to its size. And the value of your engagement ring isn’t just about price – it has precious sentimental value too.
Check to see if your engagement ring is covered by your existing home contents insurance policy. If not, you can pay extra to add your engagement ring to your policy, which will typically cover you for loss, theft and damage according to the terms of your policy. The other option is a standalone engagement ring insurance policy, which could be suitable if your engagement ring is particularly valuable or you want broader protection.
