Romantic Tips for Traveling to Tuscany for your Honeymoon

Oct 10, 2017 | Honeymoon

Ahhh, Tuscany. From the myriad of landscapes (rolling hills, bustling metropolis, everything in between...) to the delicious wine, this region of Italy is undoubtedly one of the most coveted of honeymoon destinations. We personally fell in love with this beautiful place and cannot say enough compliments! For those lucky couples who plan to hop on over to Italia for some pasta, vino, and lots of cobblestone walkways, we've got a few incredible tips straight from Evonne & Darren Photography! We'll let them take it away...

WHERE TO STAY

From Evonne & Darren Photography: We stayed at the historic Villa Nozzole in Greve, Chianti. It's a restored, 17th century villa with just 9 guest rooms, set in the middle of acres of vineyards and olive groves of the Nozzole estate. We enjoyed leisurely breakfasts and dinners at the villa, prepared by a charming Italian "nonna" (grandmotherly) chef/cook who prepared traditional homemade pastas with fresh vegetables from the villa's garden, classic tiramisu served with plenty of the estate's Chianti Classico wine and olive oil.

FAVORITE TUSCAN WINERIES

We relied on local wine expert & tour guide........ to help us select small, family run wineries to visit during our week long stay.

Solatione Winery: Owned by the Giachi family, has a sunny and colorful tasting room, where we tried their excellent varieties of classic 100% Sangiovese wines.

Azienda agricola "Il Poggione”: A small, boutique winery and farm of the Nucci family, run by two brothers, where their mother prepared a traditional, rustic lunch for us to enjoy with our wine tasting.

Podere Il Cocco: Located in the Montalcino provence, and run for over 300 years by the Bindi family. We met the eldest son, Giacomo, who has taken over the operation of the winery, and is progressively farming organic vineyards and producing excellent Brunello di Montalcino wine. Our most memorable meal was at the winery's restaurant, where Tuscan farm-to-table cuisine was served at a large communal table.

EXPLORING TUSCANY

We rented a car to explore the rest of Tuscany. The entire region is beautiful, and we didn't have a specific plan, simply deciding each day to explore different towns and stopping anywhere along the way that caught our eye or inspired us to photograph. We visited San Gimignano, Florence, Lucca, Pisa and Siena - although these towns can be crowded with tourists, they still offer the most variety for people watching, site seeing, dining and shopping.

FAVORITE RESTAURANTS

San Gimignano | Lunch at Bar La Cisterna: We ate here because it we were hungry and tired and it was the first restaurant we walked by that had an open table, but we were pleasantly surprised that the food and prices were reasonable for a busy tourist spot, located at Piazza del Cisterna.

Lucca | Lunch at Buca di Sant’Antonio: This historic restaurant had lots of character serving traditional cuisine of Lucca, including Trippa di vitello alla lucchese (veal tripe) for the adveturous foodie.

Siena | Lunch at Antica Osteria da Divo: A unique setting, almost like ancient tombs with brick and bare rock walls and exposed wood beams, but sets a romantic, candlelit environment for an intimate Sienese fine dining experience.
