We asked floral designer Carrie from Stem Floral Design in Columbus, Ohio to share her favourite seasonal autumn blooms to inspire your fall wedding flowers.
Dahlia
The striking dahlia makes a statement in any floral display with its many rows of delicate petals and an incredible array of colors from pale blush to darkest burgundy. Dahlias can bloom anytime between late June and early December, so you can enjoy these beauties much later in the year than most flowers.
Dahlias come in a range of shapes and sizes - from the ball-shaped pom pom flowers that stand proud atop their stems to those with layer upon layer of papery petals. They can be used as the main focal flower in bouquets and centerpieces, or alongside other statement blooms like roses.
Anemone
While often thought of as a spring flower, anemone planted late can also flower in September. Anemone are similar in shape and size to poppies, yet the distinctive black eye centre gives a modern feel to wedding floral displays like no other flower. From simple and classic to whimsical secret garden-inspired, the anemone can be used in just about any style of wedding. It offers a spectrum of pretty colors ranging from crisp white (the most popular) and blush to purple, burgundy, red, and pink.
Amaranthus
The perfect bloom to bring drama to your wedding flowers, amaranthus comes in the perfect fall shades of bronze and burgundy as well as striking lime green. There are several varieties yet the most commonly used in floral designs are the tall spires of feathery flowerheads (Amaranthus cruentus), and the cascading wooly flowers cascade down like a waterfall of dreadlocks (Amaranthus caudatus).
Chrysanthemums
Ah the underrated chrysanthemum! These cheery flowers create a cushion of color in festive seasonal shades of red, orange, yellow, peach, and white, as well as contrasting shades of pink. While not traditionally loved by brides, creative florists are winning them over by incorporating 'mums' into unique designs and interesting color palette that are perfect for fall.
Ranunculus
Like anemone, this typically cool weather spring flower can also bloom in fall following a late planting. Almost rose-like in appearance, ranunculus have multiple layers of very thin petals packed densely together, making them a popular choice for bridal bouquets and centerpieces. They are available in a striking range of colors from bright golds, pinks, reds, salmon, oranges and yellows, as well as white and dark plum, almost black shades. Regular ranunculus have perfectly round heads while the butterfly variety feel more naturally whimsical, with fluttery iridescent petals on wayward stems.
Ornamental grasses
The perfect accent for other fall flowers, ornamental grasses like purple fountain grass (Pennisetum advena 'Rubrum') and Chinese silver grass (Miscanthus sinensis) have beautiful burgundy-tinted plumes that waft in the breeze and add an airy touch to autumn wedding flowers.
