10 key wedding dress trends from NYBFW SS25 collections
New York Bridal Fashion Week (#NYBFW2024) has been a whirlwind of jaw-droppingly beautiful wedding dresses and our photography team has been busy on the ground, capturing the latest collections from all of your favourite bridal designers. While we're all about timeless style here at Wedding Sparrow, we love sharing wedding dress trends that can give a stylish touch to your bridal look. Let's look at some of the key wedding dress trends for 2024, many of which overlap to create exquisite dress designs that tick all the boxes for you fashion-loving brides.
1. Corset wedding dresses
Corsetry was the biggest wedding dress trend to come out of NYBFW2024 and we love the figure-hugging silhouette and feeling of romance it brings to a bridal gown. We saw form-fitting bodices in a variety of styles, including boned cups paired with high-waisted ballroom skirts, and hip-skimming designs with slinky flowing skirts. If you love this look, check out gowns from Ines di Santo, Trish Peng, Galia Lahav, and Berta.
2. Floral appliqué wedding dresses
Wedding gowns and flowers are the perfect match so it's no surprise that the floral appliqué trend we saw last season is here to stay. From tiny delicate petals to dramatic 3D blooms, there's a floral wedding dress to suit every bride's taste. Key designers to look out for floral appliqué wedding dresses are Mira Zwillinger, Nardos, Marchesa and Sareh Nouri.
3. Bow wedding dresses
Bows of all sizes are here to stay in bridal fashion and we're thrilled that this preppy trend is still popular with designers. The catwalks were awash with dramatic oversized designs using swathes of fabric, as well as tiny bows of narrow ribbon on dress straps and waistbands. Love a bow? Check out The 2nd Skin, Monique Lhuillier, Sareh Nouri and Amsale.
4. High-low skirt wedding dresses
Got a great pair of legs you'd like to show off? A high-low wedding dress, which is short at the front and longer at the back, could be the perfect style for you. These dramatic gowns are having a real moment and we're totally here for it. Throughout the catwalks we saw high-low skirts paired with many other on-trend details, such as peplums and corseted bodices, detachable sleeves, bows, and period-inspired designs.
5. Overlay wedding dresses
A wedding dress with a removable overlay is a wonderful way to create two different looks on your wedding day. From dramatic embellished capes to delicate lace tops, off-shoulder bandeaus to jewel-encrusted sheath tops, the catwalks were full of interesting extra details that allow you to cover-up for your wedding ceremony then shrug off a layer for party time. If you like the idea of an overlay, take a look at Anne Barge, Idan Cohen, Mira Zwillinger and HONOR.
6. Detachable sleeve wedding dresses
Just like overlay tops and capes, detachable sleeves are a great way to get two different looks from a single wedding dress. Sleeves can dramatically change the silhouette of your body and the style of your gown, making it feel more formal or classic, whimsical or glamorous, for example. Check out Ines Di Santo, Lihi Hod and Monique Lhuillier for serious sleeve inspiration.
7. Peplum wedding dresses
The peplum is back, but not as you know it. When peplum waistlines popped up on the runways last year, we paid them little attention in the hope they’d remain firmly in the last decade. But the peplum persisted and we now find ourselves coming around to it. The key to pulling off the peplum is in the proportions. Get it wrong, and you’ll visually shorten your silhouette. Get it right, and the effect is remarkably flattering as you can see in these elegant gowns. Check out Idan Cohen and Francesca Miranda for great takes on peplum style.
8. Short wedding dresses
We're seeing more and more short wedding dresses hit the catwalks every year, showing the popularity of higher hemlines for city weddings, welcome dinners and after parties. This year short dresses are incorporating many of the wider bridal fashion trends, including corsetry, detachable sleeves and floral appliqué. The new cocktail collection from Enaura particularly caught our eye, as well the cute mini dresses from By Watters and Trish Peng.
9. Period wedding dresses
The 2024 bridal fashion week catwalks were full of period-inspired silhouettes from famous fashion of the past. Think the conical bodices and full hip shape of Elizabethan style; empire waistlines and puff sleeves of the Regency era (thanks Bridgerton!) and the dramatic peplum silhouette, inspired by Christian Dior and his New Look of the 1940s. We also saw period influences in accessories, such as embellished Juliet caps, lace-trimmed cathedral veils and cocktail gloves.
10. Sculptural wedding dresses
Last but far from least, we simply loved the sculptural details showcased by many designers at bridal fashion week. The Atelier really embraced this 3D trend with voluminous designs, manipulating fabric, and exquisite architectural details.
