5 reasons to get married at Lake Como
Located at the foot of the Alps, Lake Como offers some of the most romantic and picturesque scenery in the world. It's not surprising that many famous actors and VIPs own property on the lake in Italy's Lombardy region, and that every year couples flock to tie the knot on its stunning shores.
So what is the appeal of Lake Como and why is it a great place for a destination wedding in Italy? We spoke to destination wedding photographer and Fine Art Curation member Troy Meikle who captured this stunning Lake Como wedding inspiration shoot at Villa Balbiano to find out.
1. Lake Como is a luxury destination
With its spectacular coast, picturesque villages and glorious sunshine, it's no surprise that Lake Como in Italy has been drawing in an A-list crowd for decades. In fact, it has been a luxury destination since Roman times. Lake Como is home to plenty of luxurious 5-star hotels and private villas, many of which are situated right on the lake's shores so you and your wedding guests can enjoy unrivalled views of the majestic mountains and vivid blue waters.
Lake Como is very accessible
Lake Como and the city of the same name are located near Milan and Lugano (in Switzerland), making the lake easily accessible for you and your wedding guests. If you're taking the train to Como, you'll be served by convenient rail connections to Como San Giovanni train station. The average journey time between Milan or Lugano to Como is only 40 minutes, while trains from Florence to Como take 2h 46m.
Lake Como has unique history and geography
Lake Como was once called “Lario” which means “deep place”. Indeed, Lake Como is the deepest in Italy at a depth of about 410 meters (1,345 feet), and one of the deepest lakes in Europe. Lake Como has the unique shape of an inverted letter Y, formed by the melting of powerful glaciers combined with the erosive action of the ancient river Adda. The world-famous town of Bellagio is located in the middle of the two branches.
You can swim in Lake Como
Due to the proximity of mountains and cold undercurrents, Lake Como’s water is cool even on the hottest days yet it is beautiful for swimming. There are many open-air swimming pools and beaches on Lake Como, the most popular located in Como, Cernobbio, Fagetto Lario, Moltrasio, and Lenno. Water sports and fishing are also popular on the lake.
There's plenty to do around Lake Como
The towns around Lake Como are close enough that you can easily visit three or four by local transport and lose yourself among magical villas and gardens; relax with a private boat tour; take a scene nature walk, or relax in a hotel spa. There's plenty of activities to create an exciting itinerary for your wedding guests, and it's a perfect honeymoon location too.
