Honeymoon Inspiration - Iceland - Part 3

May 13, 2016 | Honeymoon

We’ve saved the best until last for this 3 part crazy epic Honeymoon tour of Iceland with Thomson Holidays! If you missed the other two parts, you can see them here and here. Our final day was filled with black sand beaches, volcanoes and the biggest waterfall you’ll ever see.

We headed south to visit a completely different terrain compared to all the white snow we’ve been knee deep in for the past couple days. The South Shore features thundering waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, snow-topped volcanoes (Eyjafjallajökull - try saying that 3 times fast) and a stark coastline which was a real highlight of the day in Vik.

The thundering waterfall Skogafoss was such a sight and although surrounded by tourists, we managed to sneak some pictures with our photographer Brumley & Wells without anyone else in them! A miracle! But such a snapshot of this stunning country we’ll cherish forever (in fact, this black and white one below will be framed in our home). You can be married here at the base of the waterfall (heart eyes!) and I don’t know who wouldn’t want to! Imagine those wedding images…

The beach at the south coast is covered in black pebbles and basalt rock formations. With the cute town of Vik close by, we were able to stroll along the beach and take it all in feeling like it was our own private island. With the famous black sand making a stunning backdrop, we found these naturally formed columns standing tall over the dangerous waters of the sea. Just the week prior to us arriving, a tourist was washed away after standing too close to the water’s edge. Safety is paramount so make sure you keep a good distance from that deceptive looking water.

Needless to say we ended our final day on a high and were incredibly pleasantly surprised at how much of a perfect honeymoon destination Iceland is. What more could you need than being wrapped up in Icelandic woollens in the snow, and snuggling by warm fires in the evenings drinking cocktails? Our trip was certainly one that will stay with us forever and we highly recommend it to anyone. A huge thanks to Thomson Holidays who invited us to sample the complete senses of Iceland and it’s incredibly friendly people.

TIPS FOR VISITING ICELAND

Pack warm! And we don’t mean a couple of jumpers and scarf. Whatever it is, make sure it’s windproof, waterproof and thermal. Don’t underestimate the Winter’s here - after all, you will be on the edge of the Arctic Circle!

Budget accordingly - Food and drink prices rival that of London and New York so as long as you expect this, you’ll be fine.

Travel - Iceland has no trains. There are buses riding around the capital city of Reykjavik but for ease of travelling all over the island, hire a car.

Plan - We travelled using Thomson Holidays excursions and they were perfect for seeing almost everything Iceland had to offer. If you want to try something different, try Icelandic Horse Riding Tours or some of the other national parks.

Nightlife - Reykjavik is famous for it’s nightlife and it often doesn’t get started until after midnight on a Friday night. Join these night owls for a cocktail or two in town to enjoy the full experience.
