The Ultimate Guide to Spring Wedding Flowers
As a springtime bride, you have your pick of glorious garden bounty to create a stunning seasonal bouquet and decorate your wedding venue. Spring wedding flowers are a heady mix of delicate and textural, fragrant and symbolic, and there are so many great varieties to choose from - and that's before we get to the colours; the palest of pastels, to bright and bold oranges and yellows. Let's look at what flowers are in season for a spring wedding.
Spring wedding flowers - Peonies
The bloom du jour for many spring weddings, big blousy peonies have a short season from late spring to early summer (peaking in May). They look spectacular when in full bloom and nothing quite compares, however they are notoriously unpredictable so your florist may need to buy extra stems to ensure enough bloom in time for your wedding. Popular peonies for weddings include Coral Charm and Coral Sunset (pictured below), Sarah Bernhardt (pale pink), Bowl of Cream and Shirley Temple (both ivory).
Spring wedding flowers - Tulips
Cheerful, unmistakable harbingers of spring, tulips are typically pink, red, purple, orange and white yet specialist varieties bring more nuanced subtle shades. Tulips can be conditioned to stand upright or encouraged to bend and curve to give an elegant sculptural element to floral arrangements. We particularly love when tulips are wide open in full bloom, just before their petals drop.
Spring wedding flowers - Hellebore
Also known as the Christmas rose or winter rose, delicate yet hardy hellebore flower in mid-winter to early spring, bringing subtle color with their charming downturned petals. They can be found in a wide range of colors, including pale pink, mauve, burgundy, yellow, green and even black, as well as beautifully speckled, bi-colored varieties. These gorgeous buttercup-like blooms make wonderful accent flowers in an freeform bridal bouquet and organic-style centrepieces.
Spring wedding flowers - Ranunculus
Often mistaken for roses by those new to flowers, ranunculus are a beautiful round cup-shaped flower with countless delicate petals. They come in a range of colours from white to dark burgundy and add a soft fluttery texture to wedding bouquets. We particularly love a variety called butterfly ranunculus that have wayward stems and dainty, iridescent petals.
Spring wedding flowers - Anemone
With their striking black centers and delicate petals, anemones are a popular choice for creating a chic style statement with your wedding flowers. Available in a spectrum of pretty colors ranging from crisp white (the most popular) and blush to purple, burgundy, red and pink, the simple elegance of anemone suits any style of wedding.
Spring wedding flowers - Lily of the Valley
Delicate and timeless, lily of the valley is iconic choice for the bride that values grace and tradition. Kate Middleton and Grace Kelly both carried lily of the valley bouquets, showcasing the understated but luxurious quality of this dainty spring bloom. However, a word of caution is that Lily of the valley is particularly tiny so you will need lots of stems to make an impact, or consider bulking out your bouquet with similarly delicate white flowers like astilbe and astrantia.
Spring wedding flowers - Narcissus
Narcissus are among very first flowers to bloom in spring, a cheery sight after a long cold winter. Brides are often surprised to discover that they are available in a selection of diverse colors, not just the bright school-bus yellow. Alongside different shades of yellow, some have peach, salmon, white, and apricot blooms. Each stem might have a huge trumpet-shaped flower or many miniature ones. Narcissus bring a fresh, youthful feel to wedding flowers but do require special treatment as their stems emit a slimy sap that can kill other flowers they share a vase with.
Spring wedding flowers - Lilac
The pretty flowers of this classic garden shrub bloom from late spring to early summer. The fragrant tubular blooms come in shades of purple, pink and white and epitomize everything we all love about spring. The loose and organic shape and heavenly intoxicating scent make them the perfect addition to a country garden wedding.
Spring wedding flowers - Poppy
There's something so cheerful about a poppy that it cannot help but make you smile. The papery petals and naturally playful shape makes them an unexpected choice for a wedding, which is exactly why we love them. Poppies are perfect for use in modern, artistic, or minimalist floral designs, that allow the beautiful colors to really pop.
