Wabi Sabi Icelandic Wedding Inspiration from Reckless North

Jul 28, 2016 | Inspiration

It's our final part of the Icelandic series we travelled to the land of the midnight sun for this Summer (seriously, the sun was still up at 1am!). The edge of the Arctic Circle has never looked so beautiful thanks to Brumley & Wells, The Wells Makery, Siloh Floral, Faces By Liz and dress designers Samuelle Couture and Leanne Marshall! Be sure to watch the stunning Super 8 video at the bottom of the post too for all the ethereal action...

From Brumley & Wells: "From the beginning, we knew we wanted to incorporate the concept of Wabi Sabi into our shoot. I’m not an expert on the history or the etymology of the word by any means, but I do find myself attracted to almost every aspect of its definition - celebrating the beauty of asymmetry, accepting that things are transient and imperfect, welcoming nature to shape and form our world.

It seemed obvious to design the Reckless North Workshop with this in mind. Although not specifically in a Japanese aesthetic, I find that my approach to most of life identifies with the philosophies that are the broad foundation of Wabi Sabi.

Gathering dresses from two of our favorite NYC based designers, Samuelle Couture and Leanne Marshall, we set our models against the rugged landscapes of Iceland’s Black Sand Beach, where nature’s fierce fists are pounding reverently on the shores and knowing full well that their designs would carry the weight of our theme. The remaining details (the invitation suite, the welcome book, the name tags, a custom made deck of cards, even the whiskey label) were all originally crafted by The Wells Makery to reflect the visual concept of Wabi Sabi. It worked. Every piece made reference to the theme and paid tribute to a concept that is deeply ingrained in my heart, something as human as breathing - that beauty isn’t perfect, that perfection is a myth. I’m trying to celebrate that concept, not just physically, in the way my world looks, but internally, in the way I perceive my world. That is the tension I feel as a photographer when I’m framing an image, and as a human, when I’m torn between what is real and what is true. I guess the truth is never on the surface anyways, where the image seems to live. It’s sitting just beyond that, beyond the eyes of the subject. It’s not the image, it’s the reason you captured it. It’s not the person, It’s the beauty you saw in them. The Reckless North Workshop was an exploration of that idea, an attempt to encourage us to see beauty in the world, however dark it appears on the surface, and to continue to pursue the dreams that inspired us when we first picked up a camera. Despite all of its imperfections, the world is a beautiful place. Capture it.
